The Sänger-Bredt spaceplane was the secret, German WW II design of space pioneer Eugen Sänger and mathematician Irene Bredt. The Amerika Bomber was to circle the Earth with a series of ever-shallower "skips" off the atmosphere. At about the half way point, a long glide back to base completed the mission.
During the course of this flight the flat-bottomed craft would attain a speed of Mach 10 and an altitude of some 180 miles (280 km). Its payload was to be a 3-4 ton bomb and its intended target, New York City.
Sänger was a space visionary who later proposed that space travel should take the place of war as a means to developing technology and improving life on Earth. Sänger worked for a European aerospace group until the time of his death in 1964.
